Berkeley police arrested a suspected drug dealer after a brief chase through the neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, authorities report.

The incident began at about 12:20 p.m. when officers on patrol observed what appeared to be a drug deal at Fairview and Adeline streets in South Berkeley, police said.

As officers got closer, the men took off running.

Over the radio, police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Djuan Brown and said he was on probation for robbery.

As Brown ran into the block, through backyards and over fences, Berkeley police chased him on foot, authorities said.

BPD set up a perimeter, posting officers on Harper, Woolsey, Fairview and Adeline streets as they worked to find Brown.

Over the radio, officers said they were concerned Brown might be armed, based on his criminal record.

As police searched the block, residents shared tips with officers about where Brown might be, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

Police arrested Brown on suspicion of drug sales, drug possession and obstruction as well as probation and parole violations, BPD said.
