TBS Today, Feb. 6

Over the next week or so, we're working to get you a number of case updates from the court files as well as a few more freelance stories.

Other coverage, especially breaking news, will be a little lighter than usual due to travel.

For those of you who are just joining us, this coming week is our first real family vacation since launching The Scanner in 2022. So we'll be working — but also working to unplug.

Bear with us! And know you'll have our full attention again very soon (including most nights, weekends, etc.).

We do have two stories today, on the recent sex crime case involving a Berkeley High student as well as the carjacking attempt on Shasta we reported last week.

Berkeley sexual battery suspect released, may get diversion
Berkeley PD’s Bike Patrol picked up Audrey Barlow last week just a day after a teenager said he slapped her buttocks on her way to school.
Nevada fugitive charged with Berkeley carjacking attempt
Police said Jason Dunaway told detectives he’d gone to the Berkeley Hills “looking to either steal work trucks or steal from work truck.”

There are many ways to help The Scanner that don't cost a cent. Share our stories online, urge your neighbors to chip in and send us timely tips. This helps us fulfill our mission of being Berkeley's No. 1 public safety news source.

In other news

If you follow TBS for our court and DA coverage, the new DA is expected to come on board Feb. 18 — and we plan to attend the Board of Supervisors meeting where she is appointed.

New Alameda County DA says she’ll ‘do things a little different’
Ursula Jones Dickson said she’ll take a close look at staffing and timely charging, while also ensuring collaborative courts remain an option.

There's a lot going on that week in Berkeley and we plan to be all over it.

This week, the city of Berkeley announced a survey it hopes will help inform its approach to wildfire prevention. The deadline to chime in is Sunday, Feb. 16.

By Feb. 16, use survey to help shape future wildfire prevention
As the City of Berkeley learns from wildfire disasters elsewhere, including the Los Angeles area, complete survey to help inform potential measures to reduce wildfire risks. Take a wildfire readiness survey to help shape City efforts to reduce wildfire risks, especially those vulnerabilities shared with urban areas like Los Angeles that have been devasted by recent infernos. The survey will ask questions about which wildfire measures you have taken to protect your home and surrounding property while also inquiring about which city programs you might have used to do that work.

In case you missed it

In case you missed this week's freelance story from Kate Rauch, about what's coming down the pike for Berkeley fire prevention, here's that link again.

Berkeley aims to up wildfire prevention rules after LA fires
“I’m under no illusion that this process will be easy,” said D6 Councilman Brent Blackaby. “We’re asking a lot of the community.”
