Update: Men try to rob mom holding baby at Berkeley ATM
Berkeley has had about a dozen robberies this year — a steep drop from historic, pre-pandemic averages of about one robbery a day.
Berkeley police are investigating a robbery attempt over the weekend at a North Berkeley ATM in the bustling Shattuck Avenue business corridor.
Police said the woman, an Emeryville resident in her 30s, was at the ATM at 1480 Shattuck Ave. (at Vine Street near Safeway) when two strangers approached her Saturday shortly after 9 a.m.
The Scanner learned after publication that the woman was a mother holding her baby at the time of the robbery attempt. (This story was updated to include that information.)

The pair demanded the woman's property.
Seeing no weapons, she refused and the young men fled the scene, Berkeley police said.
As of this week, BPD said it remains an active robbery investigation. No arrests have been made.
On Friday, a man and woman with a gun pistol-whipped and robbed a 77-year-old man on Shasta Avenue during a possible carjacking attempt in the Berkeley Hills.
