UC Berkeley police investigate sexual battery near campus
A man in his 20s or 30s approached the victim and groped him while offering to sell him drugs, authorities said in a brief WarnMe alert.
Police at UC Berkeley are investigating a sexual battery that occurred adjacent to campus in the Southside neighborhood Sunday night.
The incident took place around 9 p.m. near Bancroft Way at Ellsworth Street and began near the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) at 2301 Bancroft Way, according to preliminary reports.
According to the alert, a man in his 20s or 30s approached the victim and groped him while offering to sell him drugs.
The victim turned the man down and walked away but the stranger followed him as he continued west on Bancroft Way, authorities said.
As they walked, the man groped the victim again, in the buttocks and groin area, before walking away when they reached Fulton Street, according to the email alert.
Authorities did not say whether the victim was a student or otherwise affiliated with campus.
The University of California Police Department said the man, who was about 5 feet 10 inches tall, was wearing a black and white flannel shirt.
He was described as black, according to radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner.
The incident happened within BPD's jurisdiction, according to the email alert.
The Berkeley Police Department had no record of the call as of publication time, authorities said.
