UC Berkeley student, 19, in critical after skateboard crash

A 19-year-old UC Berkeley student who crashed Tuesday night while riding an electric skateboard near Cal was left in critical condition, authorities report.
Limited details were available but police said the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, which took place shortly before 9:30 p.m.
Berkeley police said the student lost control of his skateboard, fell and hit his head while crossing Ellsworth Street on Blake Street.

Community members "helped him out of the street and called 911," Berkeley police said.
According to emergency radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner, the Berkeley Fire Department found no witnesses to the crash at the scene and saw no indication that a driver had struck the student.
BFD rushed the young man to Highland Hospital, the regional trauma center, in Oakland.
No other details were immediately available.
