The recent three-day weekend saw two gunfire investigations by Berkeley police.

No arrests have been made in either case and the investigations are ongoing, BPD said this week.

The first — which was also the year's first confirmed shooting — took place early Saturday morning on College Avenue in the Elmwood district.

Officers responded to 2817 College Ave., between Russell and Stuart streets, for a report of a single gunshot at about 2:15 a.m.

Police did not initially find evidence of gunfire in the area but, about an hour later, more tips about the shooting came in.

Officers went back to the neighborhood and spoke with a man in a tent who said he had heard a voice outside telling him he had to leave. Then he heard a gunshot.

Police also found a casing in the area.

(Closer to 4:45 a.m., BPD also received numerous calls about a loud explosion in the area but they were unable to find the cause.)

A few days later, on Monday at 7:30 p.m., BPD got a call about gunfire near King and 62nd streets in South Berkeley near the Oakland border.

Arriving officers found evidence of a shooting, including a vehicle that had been damaged, at California and 62nd streets.

No further details about that shooting have been released.

Police did investigate gunfire reported Jan. 1 only to determine later that the shooting had actually taken place hours earlier on New Year's Eve.

More recently, on Tuesday night, police investigated a ShotSpotter activation near UC Berkeley, in the 2400 block of Durant Avenue, but they found no evidence of a shooting despite a search by officers from BPD and UCPD.

One officer said he believed the sound had been a car backfiring, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

There had been two injury shootings at this time last year, although one of them turned out to have been self-inflicted, police said.
