A woman is dead and two men were wounded in a triple stabbing in West Berkeley on Saturday.

The incident began around 12:20 p.m. when someone called 911 to report that his car had just been stolen.

According to emergency dispatches, he told police he followed the car thief to the 1300 block of Russell Street near San Pablo Park.

A dispatcher told police she could hear a heated argument in the background of the open line, and called for an emergency police response to Russell Street.

Around the same time, someone called 911 to report that a man in the same area had been stabbed in the leg and that passers-by were applying pressure to his wound.

Just before 12:30 p.m., police called for an emergency medical response to Burnett and Acton streets for an "unresponsive female who was bleeding from multiple stab wounds."

The Berkeley Fire Department called for three ambulances, one for a critical patient on Burnett and the others for "two other victims on the street" closer to Russell and Acton.

"We're locking down Burnett between Park and Acton," BPD said at about 12:35 p.m.

Police subsequently taped off a large area and shut down all eastbound vehicle and pedestrian traffic at Park and Burnett streets.

Over the radio, police described finding a cellphone in the street that belonged to one of the victims.

BPD called for additional officers to canvas for witnesses, security footage and other evidence in the area.

"Please avoid this area. There are several road closures in place. No pedestrian or vehicular traffic will be allowed into the area," police said in the Nixle alert.

All three victims were taken "Code 3," with lights and sirens, to Highland Hospital.

As of publication time, the men were in stable condition but the woman had not survived, despite life-saving efforts, BPD said.

The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
