Group of 9 steals cigarettes, register from Berkeley Chevron
The burglars broke the front window to get inside, police said.
A group of people using several vehicles broke into a Berkeley gas station over the weekend, making off with the cash register and "a quantity" of cigarettes, authorities said.
The burglars also tried to open the business safe but were unsuccessful, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.
The burglary took place Sunday at 3:45 a.m. at the Chevron gas station at 1300 San Pablo Ave. at Gilman Street in northwest Berkeley.
Police initially responded to the Chevron gas station for a commercial burglar alarm.

"Officers arrived just as several vehicles (about nine suspects) were fleeing the scene," BPD said, "one of the vehicles (a white sedan) [was] last seen getting on the freeway towards Richmond."
Police determined that the group had broken the front window of the gas station to get inside.
Police responded quickly but the fleeing suspects were able to evade capture.
The case remains under investigation, Berkeley police said this week.
