Berkeley apartment fire displaces 9 people

Berkeley firefighters have joined more than 90 firefighters from Alameda County to assist with the firefight in Southern California.

As a reminder, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors is slated to decide Thursday who the DA candidate finalists will be.

The meeting is open to the public and The Scanner plans to attend. Finalist interviews, also public, are set for next week. We'll be there.

In other news

A reader (who asked to remain anonymous) shared these photos of a massive geyser in downtown Berkeley on Monday morning.

According to preliminary reports, an AC Transit bus struck a hydrant outside 2168 Shattuck Ave. (at Center Street) around 10:40 a.m.

Also, we've had some follow-up inquiries about a man who was found deceased last week in a UC Berkeley restroom.

He was reportedly unsheltered and a familiar face around town.

The coroner's office says his name remains private pending family notification. We'll keep checking.

UCPD detectives observed “no obvious signs of foul play.” The man, who appeared to be homeless, has not been identified.
