Berkeley police investigate gunfire in the Elmwood
It was the fifth non-injury shooting in Berkeley in less than a week.
Berkeley police are investigating gunfire on Christmas Eve in the typically quiet Elmwood neighborhood.
No one was hurt, but community members alerted The Scanner and asked for more information.
It was the fifth non-injury shooting in Berkeley in less than a week — and the second in the Claremont-Elmwood neighborhood where violent crime is rare.
Berkeley police said officers were called to investigate the sound of gunfire in the 2800 block of Regent Street, near Russell Street, just after 11:30 p.m.
Officers arrived quickly to search for the culprits. They found evidence of gunfire but no victims, BPD said. The shooter or shooters had already fled.
One reader told The Scanner that someone in a white vehicle had fired four rounds on the block.
Police remained in the area canvassing for surveillance footage, witnesses and other evidence.
BPD also notified local hospitals to find out whether any gunshot victims had come in, but there were no such reports.

It was only the latest alarming police call in the neighborhood.
Last week Friday, a motorist told police his vehicle had been shot at and damaged while he was driving near Tunnel and Roble roads.
The next night, police recovered an AR-15-style rifle during a suspected DUI arrest at Piedmont and Ashby avenues.
As of Thursday, Berkeley has had at least 28 shootings in 2024 leaving three dead and seven wounded.
There had been 35 shootings at this time last year, wounding eight people.
