More gunfire in Berkeley — this time on Tunnel Road

It's the third shooting in Berkeley since early Thursday morning. There have been no reported injuries.

Officers are investigating gunfire Friday in one of Berkeley's safest neighborhoods.

It's the third shooting in Berkeley since early Thursday morning. There have been no reported injuries.

On Friday just before 7 a.m., Berkeley police responded to Tunnel and Roble roads to investigate the sound of possible gunfire, authorities said.

Officers searched the area but found no victims or evidence of a shooting.

About 30 minutes later, however, a driver told police their vehicle had been shot at and damaged near Tunnel and Roble roads that morning.

The couple, a man in his 50s and a woman in her 30s, both from Oakland, said they were driving west on Tunnel Road when a man in a silver sedan reached out of his car and shot at their vehicle several times, BPD said.

The shooting happened between Bridge Road and Domingo Avenue.

There have been no arrests and the case remains under investigation, Berkeley police said.

Councilman Mark Humbert, who represents the Claremont-Elmwood neighborhood, encouraged anyone with information about Friday morning's shooting to share it with police as soon as possible.

"The gunfire in our neighborhood this morning is deeply unsettling, but I am relieved that no one was hurt," he said. "This incident reinforces the importance of our new automated license plate reader system, and I will work to put pressure on Caltrans to approve installation in the outstanding locations."

No additional information was immediately available.

There have now been 26 shootings in 2024, leaving three dead and seven wounded. There had been 34 shootings at this time last year, wounding seven.
