Berkeley BART service stopped due to person on tracks
First responders rescued an individual from the downtown Berkeley BART tracks and service had resumed as of 11:45 p.m.
BART service in Berkeley was interrupted Wednesday night due to a person on the tracks at the downtown Berkeley station.
As of publication time, the individual was still alive and first responders were working to extract him, authorities said.
BART reported the station closure just before 11:10 p.m., citing a "major medical emergency."
A few minutes after the incident, a witness told Scanner contributor Ariel Nava that she had seen a male individual wearing a black hoodie and backpack jump onto the tracks in front of an approaching BART train.
Authorities stopped the train immediately and emptied the station to allow police and firefighters to respond, she said.
In a brief statement, BART reported interrupted service between the Ashby and North Berkeley stations due to the emergency response.
AC Transit service between the stations remains available.
BART said it would provide an update at 11:45 p.m.

Nov. 14: The Berkeley Fire Department confirmed Thursday that the individual had not been seriously injured. He was taken for a medical evaluation.
