3 displaced by 2-alarm house fire in South Berkeley
Callers reported "lots of flames and black smoke" on the second floor. Arriving officers saw 10- to 15-foot flames.
A house fire in South Berkeley displaced three people on Oregon Street on Thursday, authorities report.
The Berkeley Fire Department was dispatched to the home, in the 1500 block of Oregon Street, at about 3 p.m.
Callers reported "lots of flames and black smoke" on the second floor of the house. Arriving police officers saw 10- to 15-foot flames coming from the building.
When firefighters arrived, the two-story home was "engulfed in flames and the incident was quickly upgraded" to a two-alarm fire, the Berkeley Fire Department said.
The Oakland, Albany and El Cerrito-Kensington fire departments also responded to the scene.
The fire was under control by 3:50 p.m. and crews cleared the block at 6:50 p.m., BFD said.
"It appears that the fire may have started on the second floor," the department said in a prepared statement. "The cause is still under investigation."
No one was hurt in the fire but the Red Cross was notified because three people were displaced.
No damage estimate was available this week, BFD said Friday.
"This is an active investigation with no further details at this time," the department said.
