Update: Man wounded in downtown Berkeley shooting
A witness told The Scanner there was a gunfight on the block.
Police are investigating a shooting in downtown Berkeley that sent a man to the hospital Thursday afternoon.
Limited details were available, but police got multiple reports about gunfire near Berkeley Way and Henry Street just after 2:30 p.m.
Berkeley police responded quickly to interview witnesses and search for surveillance footage that may have captured the shooting.
While officers were responding to Berkeley Way, a call came in from Highland Hospital about a possible gunfire victim who had just shown up from Berkeley.
BPD later confirmed to The Scanner that the man had been shot on Berkeley Way outside the Hope Center.
A local resident told The Scanner there had been a gunfight on Berkeley Way where two men had exchanged gunfire at close range.
One man was shot in the back.
"I thought they were blanks at first because I didn’t see any blood," said the resident, who asked to remain anonymous. "But there is damage all around."
The resident shared photographs of what appeared to be property damage from gunfire on the block, including a broken window in a building and a bullet hole in a parked car.
Involved parties reportedly left the scene in multiple vehicles, one of which went northbound on Milvia Street, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.
Officers also found casings in the street after the shooting.
As of Oct. 24, Berkeley has had 23 shootings this year leaving three dead and seven wounded.
There had been 31 shootings in Berkeley at this time last year. Seven people had been hurt but no one had been killed.
