A 90-year-old driver hit a man on a mobility scooter in a Berkeley crosswalk Sunday, sending him to the hospital with serious injuries, authorities report.

There have been no updates on his condition today.

Here's what we know.

Driver hits man on mobility scooter in Berkeley crosswalk
BPD’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team, which handles serious crashes as well as fatal ones, was dispatched to the scene.

A reader let us know the city has some traffic improvements planned at Russell and Adeline (see p. 45-50 in the following PDF for details).

We also had recent questions about a driver who struck a house Friday at about 4:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Channing Way (at Sixth Street).

BPD told us that two drivers collided, and one of them then hit the house, "causing damage to the property. Both drivers sustained suspected minor injuries, and no one inside the home was injured," BPD said. No one was arrested.

Local resident Guillaume Pierre shared photos of the collision (above) on X, asking Councilman Terry Taplin, "how long until we get a stoplight at 6th and Channing?!"

"This is exactly why roads must be paved *with* safety enhancements," Taplin replied.

A Scanner reader said he heard a loud screech Friday followed by a loud crash. Right afterward, he said, there was a strong smell of natural gas.

"I think the car must have hit the house’s gas line/meter," he said. "The authorities were making sure everyone, including traffic and bystanders, stayed far away until they were able to shut off the gas. Which is good because that Volvo is an electric car, and if it caught on fire, it could have made things much worse!"
