TBS Today, Sept. 13

TBS Today, Sept. 13

Today we went by Berkeley Humane to visit Mike (our puppy obsession).

When we arrived, we were absolutely thrilled to see him being adopted by a lovely couple — and just as thrilled to learn that our social posts about Mike had gotten him on their radar.

It's times like these when having a megaphone of sorts means the most — when someone needs help and we can shine a bit of light their way.

We wish Mike and his new family the very best. For those looking for other loving pets in need of a good home, look no further.

Aside from this, we were mostly busy with the business side of The Scanner today along with some reporting for stories to come.

T-Mack Skate Jam comes Saturday, Sept. 14

We also wanted to remind you about a great community event happening tomorrow at the Berkeley Skate Park at 711 Harrison St.

The annual T-Mack Skate Jam honors Terrence McCrary Jr., who "grew up riding the Berkeley Skate Park and was a Counselor-in-Training for the Recreation Division's Skate Camp in 2012."

The event features a skate jam, raffle prize giveaways, art creations, live music (DJ and music artist) and refreshments.

"Come out and celebrate Terrence's everlasting impact on our community," organizers write.

We will definitely be attending Saturday's event to pay our respects. It's a very special day and we have been fortunate to get to know the McCrary family a bit over the years.

If you don't know the background, Terrence was an innocent bystander who was killed in a shooting in 2016. He was just 22 years old.

It's clear he was a positive person who continues to inspire so much love.

Manslaughter plea for convicted killer, 2 murder charges dropped
“I feel the entire system failed my child,” said Berkeley resident Florence McCrary. “They don’t care about the victim at all.”

In other news

Some of you asked us about a Q&A with DA Pamela Price that The Oaklandside and Berkeleyside both ran this week.

In it, Price made false claims about our reporting right off the bat, saying we hadn't given her a chance to comment on our early stories.

The Oaklandside contacted us before publication to let us respond — and we provided a lengthy comment absolutely denying her claims.

We also provided emails in relation to several early stories showing (1) that we had given her time to comment, and (2) that they either declined to respond or declined to participate. We also said we'd be happy to provide more documentation to The Oaklandside if they needed it.

Needless to say: We have made countless efforts over the last 19+ months to request interviews with the DA's office. We've had no luck to date.

The vast majority of these requests were made in writing — meaning there is extensive documentation to disprove the DA's false claims.

No matter what your politics or personal views are, it truly boggles the mind that District Attorney Pamela Price would maintain she was given no chance to comment when there are so many public records to the contrary.

The Oaklandside did include a note in its Q&A about how we disputed her claim and also said we had provided records. But Price's claim was still included prominently in the piece.

We are not linking to the post because people have already alerted us to several other easily disprovable inaccuracies in the DA's comments. But we did want to provide a bit more context about her remarks in relation to TBS.
