TBS Today, Sept. 3

We have two stories for you today: a freelance piece focused on the city's new fire safety inspections and rules; and a brief crime story from an incident readers had asked about over the weekend.

New Berkeley fire safety regs bring anxiety — and chainsaws
Some homeowners have said they feel pressured to do expensive, seemingly futile, work on their properties this year.
Police: Fisherman stabs windsurfer at Berkeley Marina
Police said suspect Jimmy Ellis tried to flee but officers apprehended him.

On Monday, we shared the name of the man who died last week in a possible BART collision. BART still hasn't said exactly what happened but we've asked for more details.

The man was identified as Donta Dotson, 36, no address, the coroner's office said.

"A review of video revealed the incident was not criminal and no foul play was suspected," BART told us Tuesday. No additional information was available.

According to dispatch traffic, a caller advised police just after 5:45 p.m. that a person had been hit by a train.

Another unfortunate update: The East Bay Regional Park District has let us know that the vulture that appeared to have started last week's grass fire did not make it in the end. No other details were shared.

Firefighters found the partially burned bird beneath the power lines when they got to the scene.

If you noticed lots of police on University Avenue toward the end of last week, it was a DUI checkpoint.
