A dispute over a tangled fishing line led a man to stab a windsurfer at the Berkeley Marina over the weekend, authorities report.

The stabbing, which sent the windsurfer to Highland Hospital, happened Sunday afternoon, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

Police and fire personnel were dispatched at about 3:10 p.m. Sunday to handle the stabbing, which took place near the former site of HS Lordships restaurant at 199 Seawall Drive.

"Officers discovered that the victim had been windsurfing when his equipment became entangled in the suspect's fishing line," Berkeley police said. "After reaching the shore, the suspect confronted the victim verbally and then stabbed him in the upper back."

The assailant tried to flee but police apprehended him, BPD said.

He was identified as Jimmy Ellis, 31, of Hercules.
