Authorities have responded to the downtown Berkeley BART station where a person was pronounced dead Wednesday evening.

The Scanner is seeking additional information.

According to dispatch traffic, a caller advised police just after 5:45 p.m. that a person had been hit by a train.

The individual was pronounced dead a short time later, according to dispatch traffic.

No other details were immediately available.

According to the BART website, "BART service has stopped between North Berkeley and MacArthur due to a major medical emergency."

BART is working on a plan to restore service.

Update, 6:35 p.m. In a prepared statement just after 6:30 p.m., BART confirmed that a person had died after a possible collision with a BART train in downtown Berkeley on Wednesday evening.

The person was not in the trackway, BART said, but was "near the trackway" as the train approached.

The agency does not suspect foul play.

Limited BART service has resumed between the North Berkeley and MacArthur stations but the downtown Berkeley BART station remains closed, BART said.

Update, Sept. 2: The man who died was identified as Donta Dotson, 36, no address, the coroner's office said.
