Berkeley police are investigating a hit-and-run collision that sent a 9-month-old girl to the hospital this week with a head injury and broken bones, authorities report.

A driver struck her while her father was pushing her in a stroller, police said.

The driver initially stopped but decided to flee, BPD said. Pedestrian Safety Month kicked off this week with several traffic ops planned.

An update on the recent homicide: The murder case against Mark Dowling includes a hate crime allegation charge, according to court papers.

Dowling, who is white, reportedly had numerous conflicts with people related to race in the months before the murder.

The victim in the case was Black.

Mark Dowling and Marcel Jones were roommates at Harrison House. Dowling had the top bunk and Jones had the bottom. They did not get along.
Update: Berkeley Hills grass fire now contained
Hikers on the Nimitz trail called 911 to report the fire. “We heard a loud, startling explosion around 1:30,” one of them told us.
