A man with a history of conflicts at the Berkeley homeless shelter where he lived has now been charged with killing his bunkmate, according to police and court papers.

Mark Dowling had the top bunk and Marcel Jones had the bottom, police wrote. The men did not get along.

Hikers on the Nimitz trail called 911 to report the fire. “We heard a loud, startling explosion around 1:30,” one of them told us.
