Police are on the scene in South Berkeley investigating a shooting that left a man dead Friday afternoon.

Police and firefighters began getting reports at 12:45 p.m. about a shooting at 3228 Adeline St., a small apartment building between Harmon and Fairview streets in South Berkeley.

A caller told police he could see a man bleeding on a landing in the apartment building. At least one caller heard 7-8 gunshots but didn't see anyone fleeing the area, according to radio traffic.

Berkeley police remain in the area and are working to clear the scene and interview witnesses.

Traffic in the area may be impacted.

The Scanner has asked Berkeley police for any information they can share.

Friday's shooting was Berkeley's third homicide of the year.

On March 17, police say Gabriella Riemer, 23, fatally stabbed her 60-year-old mother Heather Riemer at their apartment on University Avenue.

On July 3, Steve Addison killed Matthew Gullette outside a South Berkeley halfway house on Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to police.

Update, 6 p.m. Police remain on the scene investigating Friday's homicide. Earlier in the afternoon, the coroner's office removed the man's body from the Adeline Street apartment building where he was killed.

In a brief statement, BPD said no arrests had been made and that the investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after the shooting, the family of the man who was killed arrived on the block seeking information from police. They declined to speak with reporters.

BPD asks anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call the department's homicide unit at 510-981-5741.

Update, Aug. 23: The Alameda County coroner's office has identified the victim in this case as 52-year-old Corey Dushawn Waters of Oakland. The police investigation is ongoing.
