GoFundMe launched for father of 4 critically injured in crash
Sam Bryant "was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and has remained in critical condition with slight improvements," his family says.
Family members have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Samuel Bryant, a father of four who was in a serious collision in Berkeley last month.
Bryant, 45, had been recovering from an illness and fell asleep at the wheel on his way home from work, his family said.
Bryant was alone in his Toyota SUV when the collision happened July 20 on eastbound I-80 at about 2:30 a.m. on the stretch of freeway between University Avenue and Gilman Street.
His SUV "rolled over several times. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and has remained in critical condition with slight improvements. Sam is getting the best care available in ICU and his team of doctors says he will be there for a good while," according to the GoFundMe.
The collision left Bryant with numerous broken bones including a fractured skull. He has a second surgery on his neck scheduled this week at Highland Hospital, where he has been since the crash, his family said.
Jovita Bryant, Sam's wife, has asked the community to pray for her husband's recovery.
"If you love Sam, just pray," she told The Scanner previously. "Prayer changes everything."
Sam Bryant is a member of the Word Assembly Family of Churches and has been active in his motorcycle club, the Oakland Zodiacs. He is well known in the community, his wife said.
Bryant was the primary breadwinner for his family prior to the crash.
"We are appealing to the hearts and kindness of friends, family and the public to help our family," the GoFundMe reads. "I have confidence and faith that God will make a way."
The family hopes to raise $15,000 to help with costs related to Bryant's recovery and living expenses while he is unable to work. As of publication time, the community had pledged more than $2,000.
