A driver in Berkeley struck a female pedestrian on Thursday evening, sending her to the hospital with potentially serious injuries, police said.

The crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. at Benvenue Avenue and Parker Street in the Southside neighborhood near UC Berkeley.

According to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner, the driver called the Berkeley Police Department to report the crash.

The pedestrian was described as an older woman who was conscious and breathing after the collision. She reportedly sustained a head injury.

The Berkeley Fire Department rushed the woman to Highland Hospital "Code 3" (with lights and sirens).

Police also indicated over the radio that the collision might require a response by BPD's Fatal Accident Investigation Team, which handles serious crashes as well as fatal ones.

Berkeley police remained in the area for hours after the crash due to the seriousness of the incident.

Update, July 12, 1:55 p.m. BPD said the woman who was hit, an 80-year-old from Berkeley, is in stable condition Friday. The driver is in his 20s and also from Berkeley, BPD said.

Update, July 13: Police said the driver was westbound on Parker turning north onto Benvenue when he hit the pedestrian, according to initial reports.

BPD does not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The primary collision factor has not been determined and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
