Trio steals $41,000 in cosmetics from Berkeley Sephora
Police arrested an 18-year-old man and recovered about $6,000 in stolen merchandise, BPD said.
Three people broke into the Berkeley Sephora shop on Fourth Street early Tuesday morning and stole $41,000 in cosmetics, authorities report.
Berkeley police said they were able to capture one of the culprits and recover some of the goods.
Two people got away after using their getaway car to ram a police vehicle, BPD said. The investigation is ongoing.
Berkeley police got an alert at about 4:10 a.m. that the burglar alarm at Sephora, at 1785 Fourth St., had been activated.
Arriving officers saw three people running out of the store to a getaway car while carrying stolen goods, BPD said.
Two of them made it into the car while a third ran off on foot.
An officer parked behind the getaway car to block it in, police said, but the driver reversed, rammed the police cruiser and managed to escape, BPD said.
Police chased the man who fled on foot but he lost them in the neighborhood.

He again ran from police, but they caught up to him and detained him a few blocks away after a brief foot chase, BPD said.
Police identified the man as 18-year-old Bryant Heard (no address).
Police arrested Heard on suspicion of burglary, grand theft, conspiracy, resisting arrest and possession of burglary tools.
He is being held on a bail of $130,000 and is scheduled for arraignment Thursday, according to jail records online.
Officers recovered about $6,000 in stolen property that had been discarded along Heard's flight path, BPD said.
