Berkeley police detained several people early Sunday morning after a report of gunfire and a large crowd fighting at Telegraph and Durant avenues.

UC Berkeley's ShotSpotter system picked up a single gunshot in the 2400 block of Durant Avenue at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

No associated injuries were reported.

Berkeley police responded quickly and detained one person matching the shooter's description, a white man in his 20s, 5 foot 10 with a skinny build wearing a white shirt and jeans, according to emergency traffic.

Officers detained him at Channing Way and Dana Street after a brief foot chase, according to emergency dispatches.

BPD officers later discovered a possible firearm on Durant east of Dana Street as well as a shell casing at Telegraph and Durant, according to dispatch traffic.

UC Berkeley police also detained two people at Dana and Durant who may have been picking up items discarded by the man running from police, according to preliminary traffic.

They were later identified and released.

As of June 9, Berkeley has had 16 shootings with six people wounded.

Last year at this time, there had been 11 shootings with three people hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.

Update, 2:50 a.m. Berkeley police arrested one person. We've asked for details.

UCPD put out a WarnMe alert at 2:45 a.m. advising people to avoid Telegraph and Channing "until further notice."

Update, June 9, 2 p.m. The man who was arrested was identified as Aaron Lovett, 29, of Dixon.

Lovett was arrested on suspicion of willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, carrying a concealed weapon on a person, carrying a loaded firearm in public and obstruction, according to booking records.

His bail was set at $135,000 and he is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.

Update, June 10: BPD confirmed that they recovered a loaded gun " in the bushes of nearby UC dormitory on the southeast corner of Durant Avenue and Dana Street."

As of Monday, Lovett remained in custody. His booking photograph has been added to the story.
