Freeway shooting in Berkeley, patient taken to Highland

A person was taken to the hospital after a freeway shooting in Berkeley on Friday afternoon, according to preliminary reports.
The shooting happened near Ashby Avenue and Interstate 80 just before 4:50 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol received reports about a silver sedan, with the engine smoking, that had crashed into a guardrail.
A woman got out of the car and was screaming, according to CHP traffic.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head or neck, according to preliminary reports.
Berkeley police and firefighters responded to the scene along with the California Highway Patrol.

Update, 6:30 p.m. The CHP provided the following statement.
"On Friday, April 5, at approximately 4:49 PM, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers assigned to the Oakland Area office received a call of a crash with injuries on the Ashby Avenue on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 80 (I-80). Additional callers to 9-1-1 indicated an occupant in the crashed vehicle, a silver Toyota Camry, had been shot by an occupant in another vehicle just prior to the crash. The victim has been transported to a local hospital for treatment."
