Man, 61, in critical condition after BART incident

As of 4:30 p.m., BART said there was "limited service" on the red and orange line and that BART is working to restore full service.

Authorities have responded to the North Berkeley BART station for a report of an individual in a wheelchair who was struck by a train shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday.

"BART service has stopped at North Berkeley due to a major medical emergency," the transit agency reported at 3:35 p.m.

Update, 3:50 p.m. BART says the North Berkeley station is closed and there is no service on the line north of the station.

BART says riders should "seek alternate means of transportation" on the orange and red lines north of North Berkeley BART.

In emergency radio dispatches, the Berkeley Fire Department said it was preparing the person who was on the tracks for ambulance transport.

The man was identified as Brett Estes, 61, of Berkeley, the Alameda County coroner’s office said.

Update, 4 p.m. The Berkeley Fire Department extricated the patient and transported that individual to Highland Hospital with critical injuries, according to emergency dispatches.

Update, 4:10 p.m. BART has confirmed that there is no train service between the downtown Berkeley station and El Cerrito Plaza.

Update, 4:15 p.m. As of 4:15 p.m., BART said there was "limited service" on the red and orange line and that BART is working to restore full service.

BART confirmed that a man in a wheelchair had been rescued from the trackway.

Update, 5:20 p.m. The man who was taken to the hospital is 61 years old, authorities said.

Shortly before the incident at BART, police were dispatched to the 1300 block of University Avenue to check on him because a person who was concerned about his welfare called BPD, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.
