Man runs red light in Berkeley crash, serious injuries reported

A driver sustained serious injuries in a two-car crash in South Berkeley over the weekend after a man ran a red light and fled the scene, authorities report.
The man who ran the light tried to hide from Berkeley police, who found him nearby and detained him.
The collision took place Saturday shortly before 10:30 a.m. at Sacramento Street and Alcatraz Avenue, police said in response to a Berkeley Scanner inquiry.
BPD said multiple callers reported the collision.
The driver who struck the other car jumped out and ran from the scene, police said.
Officers found him hiding behind a vehicle about four blocks away, BPD said.
The victim, a woman in her 70s, sustained spine and neck fractures in addition to other injuries, police said.
BPD said her injuries were serious but that she was expected to survive.
The driver who struck her also had fractured bones, including ribs and his wrist, police said.
Both drivers, who were each alone in the car when the crash happened, were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Directions of travel were not immediately available but police said unsafe speed played a role in the crash.
The man's name and potential criminal allegations were unavailable Sunday because he had not yet been arrested, authorities said.
