Berkeley woman in her 80s scares off would-be intruder
The woman was napping at her home near Oxford and Virginia when the sound of breaking glass woke her up.
Berkeley police arrested a man who smashed a woman's window and tried to break into her home Sunday morning only to be thwarted when she confronted him, authorities said.
The woman, who is in her 80s, was napping at home Sunday in the 1700 block of Oxford Street (near Virginia Street) when the sound of breaking glass woke her up at about 10:20 a.m., BPD said in response to a Scanner inquiry.
When the woman went to investigate, she found a stranger dressed in black who had one leg inside her apartment window, police said.

The woman told the man she was calling police and he fled the scene.

Responding officers were able to track the man down and identified him as 41-year-old Jason Soltis (unhoused), Berkeley police said.
On Tuesday, the Alameda County DA's office charged Soltis with burglary, according to court records online.
Soltis was sent to San Quentin Prison for vehicle theft in 2022 but got out last year, according to court records.
As of Tuesday afternoon, he remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail. No bail amount was listed.
Soltis is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday morning at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
