A Berkeley man is in critical condition Wednesday night after being set on fire by an apparent stranger on University Avenue, authorities report.

Berkeley police got a call just after 8 p.m. about a person who had been set on fire near University Avenue and Bonar Street.

Police say the assailant poured gasoline on the 68-year-old man and lit him on fire. Then he fled the scene.

Investigating officers learned that witnesses heard some arguing just before the attack.

The victim was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland and is in critical condition, according to BPD.

The incident happened on the southwest corner of University and Bonar, according to the Berkeley Police Department.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
