UC Berkeley police make arrest in sex crime case
UCPD said it cannot release any details about the suspect but has asked anyone with additional information to come forward.
Police at UC Berkeley say they have made an arrest in connection with a sexual battery case involving several female victims on campus over the past week.
UCPD said it could not release any details about the suspect, who is a man, but asked anyone with additional information to come forward.
"Today UCPD arrested a suspect connected to the recent sexual battery cases on and around campus," authorities announced at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday. "UCPD would like to thank those in the community who have come forward to report encounters with the sexual battery suspect who was described in several previous WarnMe messages. Additional similar crimes that occurred over the last week have been reported."
UCPD said the case was "complex and still under investigation. We are unable to release further details about the suspect at this time."
UCPD can be reached at 510-642-6760.
UCPD said it will now "increase high-visibility patrols throughout the campus" and that community members "may notice additional police officers as well as our non-sworn Security Patrol Officers and student Community Service Officers."
Possible sex crime series at UC Berkeley
The University of California Police Department put out several warnings about the incidents and, on Tuesday morning, said at least four of the attacks might be related.
Three were described as sexual batteries, where a man groped a woman, police said.
One appeared to involve similar tactics but the woman was able to get away.
At least two of the victims were UC Berkeley students.
The reported incidents took place all over campus, in the Eucalyptus Grove, near Memorial Stadium, near Stephens Hall in the center of campus and near the Foothill housing complex on the north side.
