UPDATE: Malik Djoumi ID'd as man who died at People's Park
UCPD was notified Tuesday just before 12:10 p.m. about a possible fatality in People's Park.
Update, Jan. 19: The man who died in a tent in People's Park earlier this month has been identified as 32-year-old Malik Djoumi of Berkeley, the Alameda County coroner's office said Thursday. His cause of death has not been determined pending the completion of the death investigation.
Original story, Jan. 3: The University of California Police Department is investigating the death of a man found inside a tent in People's Park in Berkeley on Tuesday.
UCPD was notified Tuesday just before 12:10 p.m. about a possible fatality in the park, in the 2500 block of Haste Street, not far from the UC Berkeley campus.
Officers responded and found the man deceased inside a tent.
A community member told The Berkeley Scanner that paramedics had walked over to a red tent in the park, taken a look and then walked away.
UCPD officers then created a large perimeter around the tent using crime scene tape.
The deceased man has yet to be identified and the incident remains under investigation, UCPD told The Berkeley Scanner.
UCPD asks anyone with information about the fatality investigation to call UCPD at 510-642-6760.
Just two months ago, in early November, police also responded to People's Park after the death of a man who had been staying in a tent there.
The Berkeley Scanner will share more information if it becomes available.
