Cyclist in critical condition after car crash in Berkeley on Friday
Police are still working to determine the circumstances of the crash on San Pablo Avenue near Virginia Street.
A cyclist in his early 30s is in critical condition this weekend after being struck by a driver in northwest Berkeley on Friday night, authorities report.
The crash took place on San Pablo Avenue near Virginia Street at about 7:05 p.m., the Berkeley Police Department said.
Police are still working to determine the circumstances of the crash and will review any available video footage from the area in the coming days.
Police said the driver was southbound on San Pablo Avenue in a Volvo sedan and struck the cyclist in the southbound lanes.
The cyclist's direction of travel has not been determined, BPD said.
He was reported to be unconscious with shallow breathing in the immediate aftermath of the crash, according to dispatch traffic reviewed by The Berkeley Scanner.
The cyclist was rushed to Highland Hospital with major injuries and is in critical condition as of Saturday.
His city of residence was not immediately available.
The driver remained at the scene, police said.
BPD's Fatal Accident Investigation Team was called in to analyze the scene.
The unit handles both fatal and serious injury collisions.
