A man was punched and kicked "in an unprovoked attack" on the UC Berkeley campus early Sunday morning, authorities report.

The aggravated assault happened at about 2 a.m. outside the Li Ka Shing Center on the northwest corner of campus near Oxford Street and University Avenue in downtown Berkeley.

The victim is not affiliated with UC Berkeley, the University of California Police Department told The Berkeley Scanner on Sunday night.

According to UCPD, the man was already on the ground on the south side of the building when he was punched and kicked by an unknown individual "causing injuries to his face."

The assailant and two other people fled in a gray sedan, UCPD said in a WarnMe alert just after 5:20 p.m. Sunday.

(The incident had not been reported to police until 3 p.m. Sunday, UCPD told TBS after publication.)

Police ask anyone with information about the unprovoked attack to call UCPD at 510-642-6760.
