Police in Berkeley investigated gunfire Friday evening at a private student housing complex just across the street from UC Berkeley.

No one was wounded, police said, but the incident comes just one day after hundreds of parents attended a meeting with Cal officials about campus safety concerns following a recent anti-Asian hate crime report and other incidents.

Berkeley police said UCPD's ShotSpotter gunfire detection system picked up seven loud reports shortly after 7 p.m. Friday in the 2500 block of Bancroft Way.

Investigating officers found bullet casings on an upper floor of The Standard, a private student housing complex in the Southside Berkeley neighborhood.

There were no victims at the scene, nor was there property damage, police said.

BPD thought it was likely that someone had fired a gun into the air, but the investigation is ongoing.

Berkeley has had about 40 confirmed shootings in 2022. The Scanner is working on a gunfire map to show all the incidents by location.
